Resumo Invasões biológicas vêm levando várias espécies à extinção, sendo projetado como o principal causador de mudanças na biodiversidade em lagos neste século. Entretanto, o conhecimento dos impactos sobre a ictiofauna Neotropical ao longo do tempo permanece bastante incipiente, especialmente quando se considera a diversidade funcional de comunidades nativas. Neste estudo, nós procuramos identificar os efeitos das espécies não nativas, especialmente os piscívoros não nativos Cichla kelberi and Pygocentrus nattereri, sobre a diversidade funcional da ictiofauna da Lagoa Carioca, bacia do médio rio Doce, Minas Gerais. Utilizando dados de ocorrência de oito anos entre 1983 e 2010, combinados a uma análise de atributos ecomorfológicos, observamos que a riqueza de espécies decaiu a 56%, enquanto a riqueza funcional é de apenas 27% da encontrada antes das introduções. Ou seja, mais do que espécies, a ictiofauna sofreu um declínio significativo na amplitude de atributos funcionais, o que pode levar a impactos severos em processos ecológicos neste sistema. Ao considerar todos os componentes da ictiofauna atual (espécies nativas e não nativas), as métricas de riqueza não sofreram alterações ao longo do tempo. Entretanto, mesmo mantendo os níveis de biodiversidade, espécies não nativas não são capazes de compensar totalmente as espécies nativas extintas em termos funcionais.

Abstract Biological invasions are leading several species to extinction and are projected as a main driver of biodiversity changes in lakes for this century. However, the knowledge of their impacts on the Neotropical ichthyofauna over time remains largely incipient, especially when considering the functional diversity of native communities. Here we aim to identify the effects of non-native species, especially the non-native piscivorous Cichla kelberi and Pygocentrus nattereri, on the functional diversity of the native ichthyofauna of the Carioca Lake, Middle Rio Doce basin, state of Minas Gerais. Using fish occurrence data for eight years from 1983 to 2010 combined with an ecomorphological-trait analysis, we found that while the native species richness dropped to 56%, the functional richness is only 27% of that found before introductions. In other words, more than species, the ichthyofauna suffered an impressive decline in the range of functional traits, which can further have severe impacts on ecological processes within that system. When considering all the components of the current ichthyofauna (native and non-native species), neither taxonomic nor functional richness have changed over time. However, even keeping biodiversity levels, non-native species are not able to fully compensate for the extinct native ones in terms of functions.

Resumo Objetivo Temperatura e luz são reconhecidas como importantes fatores para eclosão de efípios em sistemas dulcícolas tropicais e temperados. Curiosamente, alguns autores sugerem que remover a cápsula dos ovos de resistência seria um benefício quando se trata de estudos de eclosão ex situ, expondo esses ovos a uma maior quantidade de luz. Este estudo teve como objetivo comparar a diferença na taxa de eclosão entre os ovos de resistência descapsulados e efípios intactos de Daphnia laevis, (Cladocera) que ocorre em lagos tropicais. Métodos Os efípios utilizados neste trabalho foram coletados no sedimento de um reservatório na cidade de Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais, Brasil). O experimento foi realizado em laboratório com dois grupos distintos: efípios intactos e ovos de resistência descapsulados. Para isso, descapsulamos manualmente 120 efípios e mantivemos outros 120 intactos (seis réplicas com 20 efípios cada) e incubamos todos a 22ºC (fotoperíodo de 12h) por 30 dias, fazendo monitoramento diário. Resultados Os resultados mostraram que o decapsulamento influenciou negativamente o sucesso da incubação, uma vez que os efípios intactos apresentaram 22% de taxa de eclosão, e os descapsulados, apenas 6%. Além disso, até o vigésimo sétimo dia foi observado nascimento de Daphnias do grupo com efípios intactos, enquanto que para o grupo de ovos descapsulados, a última eclosão ocorreu no décimo dia. Os ovos descapsulados estão sujeitos à alta luminosidade que pode comprometer o desenvolvimento do embrião. Conclusões Neste contexto, sugerimos que a remoção da cápsula protetora dos ovos seja feita com cautela, pois em algumas espécies isso pode danificar os ovos de resistência, alterando a viabilidade e comprometendo a exatidão dos estudos com taxas de eclosão.

Abstract Aim Temperature and light have been recognized as important factors for ephippia hatching in temperate and tropical freshwater systems. Oddly some authors suggested that decapsulation of resting eggs would be a pro when it comes to ex situ hatching studies, exposing those eggs to a greater amount of light. This study aimed to compare the difference in the hatching rate between resting eggs decapsulated and intact ephippia of Daphnia laevis, a zooplankton that occurs at lakes, in tropical freshwaters (Cladocera). Methods The ephippia used in this work were collected at the sediment of a reservoir, in Belo Horizonte city (Minas Gerais, Brazil). We set up the laboratory experiment with two distinct groups: intact ephippia and decapsulated resting eggs. For that, we manually decapsulated 120 ephippia and kept 120 others intact (six replicas with 20 ephippia each), then incubated them all with culture water at 22ºC (12h photoperiod) for 30 days with daily monitoring. Results The results showed that decapsulation influenced negatively the hatching success, as the intact ephippia had a hatching rate of 22%, while those decapsulated only had 6%. In addition, Daphnia hatchlings were observed for intact ephippia group up to the twenty-seventh day, while for the decapsulated the last hatching occurred on the tenth day. Decapsulated eggs are subject to high exposure to light and it may jeopardize the embryo development. Conclusions In this context, we suggest that removing the protective capsule from the eggs needs to be done with caution, since in some species this can damage the resting eggs, which alters the viability and compromise the accuracy of the hatching rates studies.

Cyanobacteria are phytoplanktonic microorganisms that are susceptible to the deleterious effects of pharmaceutical residues in the aquatic environment, which poses a challenge to the environment exposed to diverse pharmaceutical products and their potential effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the antibiotic substances ciprofloxacin and chlorhexidine in pharmaceutical preparations on the growth and production of chlorophyll of two cyanobacterial strains, Microcystis aeruginosa and Microcystis panniformis, isolated from a lake in a Brazilian environmental protection area. The EC50 and EC10 of chlorhexidine for M. aeruginosa were 206.4 µg/L and 108.5 µg/L, respectively, and for M. panniformis were 171.4 µg/L and 116.6 µg/L, respectively. The EC50 and EC10 of ciprofloxacin for M. aeruginosa were 17.24 µg/L and 3.21 µg/L, respectively, and for M. panniformis were 13.56 µg/L and 1.50 µg/L, respectively. The toxicity of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin (drug) and chlorhexidine (standard solution) to the Microcystis species was demonstrated, and these species were both very sensitive to ciprofloxacin. Our results suggest that the strains of M. aeruginosa and M. panniformis may be affected by exposure to residues of ciprofloxacin (>1.5 µg/L), which may represent a risk to the survival of aquatic species.

ABSTRACT Cyanobacteria possess metallic ion interaction properties that should be explored with the aim of recovering arsenic (As) contaminated areas. Contamination of As is an issue of worldwide concern due to the risk of human chronic intoxication and negative environmental health effects. In this study the potential decontamination of As(III) and As(V) using cyanobacteria cultures was assessed. Microcystis novacekii (Komárek-Compere, 1974) showed normal growth in concentrations of As(V) similar to those found in natural environments contaminated with As, demonstrating its resistance to As(V). Growth rates gradually decreased upon exposure to high As(V) concentrations from 600 to 5630 mg.L-1 while As(III) affected growth from 14.7 - 85.7 mg.L-1. The As(III) EC50 value (41.0 mg.L-1) was 140-fold lower possibly due to differences in As(III) and As(V) absorption pathways. Upon exposure to 14.7 mg.L-1 As(III), 21.2% of As was removed from culture medium. The absorption capacity (12000 mg.kg-1) remained constant with increasing As(III) concentrations in a dose independent effect. The potential of M. novacekii for As decontamination was demonstrated in this study. This microorganism is recommended in As bioremoval studies due to its autotrophic-mixotrophic growth, low nutritional requirements and high As(III) absorption capacity.

Resumo Objetivo Avaliar os efeitos da heterogeneidade ambiental promovida pela estratificação térmica sobre a distribuição de variáveis limnológicas e de grupos funcionais fitoplanctônicos (GF´s) em dois lagos naturais. Métodos Foram realizadas medidas mensais no perfil vertical de um lago raso monomítico quente (Lago Carioca) e em um profundo e meromítico (Lago Dom Helvécio), ao longo de cinco anos. Resultados A zonação vertical evidente gerada pela elevada estabilidade térmica durante o período de estratificação favoreceram o aumento da heterogeneidade espacial e, consequentemente, da riqueza de grupos funcionais nos dois lagos. No epilímnio, ocorreu dominância de clorofíceas e desmídias de pequeno tamanho (NA, A e X1, ≤20µm) e dinofíceas de maior porte (Lo, ≥20µm), associadas a alta turbulência, disponibilidade de luz e limitação por fósforo solúvel. No metalímnio, foram observadas cianobactérias filamentosas (R) e clorofíceas coloniais (F) de maior tamanho (≥20µm), associadas a hábitats estáveis com elevadas concentrações de N-NH4 e P-PO4-3 e condições limitantes de luz. Comparativamente, o lago Dom Helvécio registrou maior riqueza de GF´s nas camadas meta-hipolimnéticas (SN, P) bem como maior de número de espécies acomodadas por grupo. Sazonalmente, mudanças nas condições climáticas (ex. redução da temperatura do ar provocando perda de calor) causaram a quebra da estabilidade da coluna d’água, o que promoveu a redistribuição das formas dissolvidas de nutrientes e o aumento da limitação por luz nos dois lagos durante o período de mistura. Como consequência, foi identificada uma drástica redução de riqueza de GF´s e da biomassa das populações (≤80%). Conclusões A estabilidade térmica e atelomixia foram funções de força fundamentais na geração de heterogeneidade vertical durante a estratificação, favorecendo a coexistência e, consequentemente, o aumento da riqueza e biomassa de GF´s.

Abstract Aim To evaluate the effects of environmental heterogeneity promoted by thermal stratification on the distribution of limnologic variables and phytoplankton functional groups (FGs) in two natural lakes. Methods Monthly measurements were performed over a five-year period in the vertical profile of a warm monomitic shallow lake (Lago Carioca) and in a deep and meromictic (Lake Dom Helvécio). Results The vertical zonation generated by the high thermal stability during the stratification period promoted an increase in the spatial heterogeneity and, consequently, in the richness of functional groups of the two lakes. In the epilimnion, the dominance of small chlorophytes and desmids (NA, A and X1, ≤20μm) and larger dinophyceans (Lo, ≥20μm) were associated with high turbulence and light availability and soluble phosphorus limitation. In the metalimnion, the presence of filamentous cyanobacteria (R) and colonial chlorophyceans (F) of larger size (≥20µm) were associated with stable habitats with high concentrations of N-NH4 and P-PO4-3 and light limiting conditions. Comparatively, Lake Dom Helvécio presented a higher richness of FGs in the meta-hipolimnetic layers (SN, P) as well as a higher number of species per functional group. Seasonal changes in the climatic conditions (e.g. the decrease in air temperature with the consequent heat loss) caused the break of the water column stability, which promoted the redistribution of the dissolved nutrient forms and the increase of light limitation in the two lakes during the mixing period. Therefore, there was a drastic reduction in the richness and population biomass of FGs (≤80%). Conclusions Thermal stability and atelomixis were the main driving forces of vertical heterogeneity during the stratification, favoring the coexistence of FGs and, consequently, their increase in richness and biomass.

Resumo Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo principal avaliar a presença de coerência temporal de variáveis limnológicas e pares de lagos para quatro lagos tropicais da região do Parque Estadual do Rio Doce, utilizando dados mensais do Programa de Pesquisas Ecológicas de Longa Duração (PELD) entre os anos de 2004 a 2009. Metodologia Dados de sub-superfície (0,5 metro) das lagoas Carioca, Dom Helvécio, Gambazinho e Jacaré foram utilizados nas análises. Nós estimamos a coerência temporal a partir da criação de séries temporais para cada uma das variáveis. Por meio dessas séries, foi calculado o coeficiente de correlação de Pearson entre todos os pares de lagos (N=6) e realizado a média. Nós também analisamos a correlação entre a coerência temporal encontrada para os diferentes pares de lagos e dois preditores de padrões espaciais: proximidade e exposição a fatores climáticos. A proximidade espacial dos pares de lagos foi calculada em quilômetros e a exposição a fatores climáticos foi estimada utilizando duas métricas: área superficial e área superficial / profundidade média. Resultados Os maiores níveis de coerência temporal foram registrados para temperatura da água (0,97), pH (0,78) e carbono orgânico dissolvido (COD) (0,74). Já os menores níveis foram verificados para clorofila-a (0,25) e riqueza fitoplanctônica (-0,02). A coerência temporal média foi de 0,58. Diferente de outros estudos, não foi encontrado uma correlação significativa entre as sincronicidades dos pares de lagos e as diferenças de suas exposições a fatores climáticos. Além disso, nenhuma relação foi encontrada com a proximidade espacial. Conclusões Nossos resultados demonstram a existência de coerência temporal em lagos tropicais a níveis compatíveis com aquelas encontradas em regiões temperadas. Nosso trabalho contribui para o conhecimento de como a sincronicidade funciona em diferentes conjuntos de lagos e regiões climáticas.

Abstract Aim: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the presence of temporal coherence of limnological variables and pairs of lakes considering four tropical lakes of the Rio Doce State Park, using monthly data from the Long-Term Ecological Research Program (LTER) between the years of 2004 to 2009. Methods Subsurface data (0.5 meters) from the Carioca, Dom Helvécio, Gambazinho, and Jacaré Lakes were used in the analysis. We estimated the temporal coherence from the creation of time series for each of the variables. Through these series, we calculated the Pearson correlation coefficient between all pairs of lakes (N=6) and performed the average. We also analyzed the correlation between the temporal coherence found for the different pairs of lakes and two predictors of spatial patterns: proximity and exposure to climatic factors. The spatial proximity of the lake pairs was calculated in kilometers, and the exposure to climatic factors was estimated using two metrics: surface area and surface area/mean depth ratio. Results The largest temporal coherence levels were recorded for water temperature (0.97), pH (0.78), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) (0.74). The lowest levels were found for chlorophyll-a (0.25) and phytoplankton richness (-0.02). The average temporal coherence was 0.58. Different from other studies, no significant correlation was found between the synchronicity of the lake pairs and the differences in their exposure to climatic factors. Also, no relation was found with the spatial proximity. Conclusions Our results demonstrate the existence of temporal coherence in tropical lakes to compatible levels with those found in temperate regions. Our work contributes to the knowledge of how synchronicity works at different set of lakes and climatic regions.

Uma lista das espécies de zooplâncton identificadas durante dez anos de estudos no sistema de lagos do médio Rio Doce é apresentada. Este sistema de lagos faz parte do bioma da Mata Atlântica, um hotspot de biodiversidade. Três tipos de estudos foram conduzidos pelo Programa de Pesquisas Ecológicas de Longa Duração (PELD-UFMG site4): i) um estudo temporal, que amostrou quatro lagoas mensalmente e três lagoas semestralmente durante dez anos; ii) um estudo comparativo entre a composição de espécies da região limnética e litorânea e iii) um estudo espacial que avaliou a composição de espécies de dezoito lagoas (oito dentro dos limites do Parque Estadual do Rio Doce (PERD) e dez na sua região do entorno) durante um ano com amostragens trimestrais. Um total de 354 taxa foram identificados sendo 175 pertencentes a Rotifera, 95 a Protozoa (Amoeba Testacea), 55 a Cladocera e 25 a Copepoda. Embora muitas espécies identificadas sejam comuns a ambientes tropicais, são apresentados novos registros para a bacia do Médio Rio Doce. O grupo de lagos fora do PERD apresentou uma maior riqueza exclusiva comparado ao grupo de lagoas dentro do PERD. Este padrão pode ser devido a maiores frequência e intensidade de distúrbios aos quais as lagoas fora do PERD estão sujeitas, já que este é um fator importante que afeta a estruturação de comunidades. Este ecossistema aquático apresenta mais da metade das espécies de zooplâncton já registradas para o Estado de Minas Gerais e é, sem dúvida, uma das prioridades do Brasil para a conservação, sustentando uma alta diversidade em uma região muito pequena, limitada e ameaçada.

A list of zooplankton species identified during ten years of studies in the lake system of the middle Rio Doce basin is presented. This lake system integrates the Atlantic Forest biome, a biodiversity hotspot. Three types of studies were achieved by the Brazilian Long Term Ecological Research Program (Brasil-LTER/PELD-UFMG site 4): i) a temporal study (study 1) which sampled four lakes monthly and three lakes twice a year during ten years; ii) a comparative study of limnetic and littoral species composition (study 2) and iii) a spatial study (study 3) that evaluated the species composition of eighteen lakes (eight lakes inside the Rio Doce State Park (RDSP) and ten lakes in its surrounding area) during one year with quarterly sampling. A total of 354 taxawere identified out of which 175 belong to the Rotifera, 95 to the Protozoa (Amoeba Testacea), 55 to Cladocera and 25 to Copepoda. Although many identified species where common in tropical environments, we present new records for the Middle Rio Doce basin. The group of lakes outside the RDSP showed higher exclusive species compared to lakes inside the RDSP. This pattern may be due to higher disturbance intensity and frequency to which the lakes outside RDSP are subjected, being an important factor affecting community structure. These aquatic ecosystems presents more than half of the zooplankton species registered for the Minas Gerais State and is, undoubtedly, one of the Brazil's priorities for conservation, sustaining high diversity in a very small, limited and threatened region.

This study presents results of the inventory of algal flora conducted between August 2007 and May 2008 in 18 lakes of the middle Rio Doce lake system, most of which is in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. We recorded 481 taxa, increasing the known total phytoplankton diversity of the region (gamma diversity) by 80%. The following classes were represented: Zygnematophyceae (171 taxa), Cyanobacteria (101), Chlorophyceae (71), Bacillariophyceae (42), Euglenophyceae (43), Trebouxiophyceae (24), Dinophyceae (8), Xanthophyceae (8), Chrysophyceae (6), Cryptophyceae (6) and Oedogoniophyceae (1). We identified 221 taxa that were rare (restricted to one or two lakes), and 101 that were considered representative (present in at least nine lakes). Botryococcus braunii, Elakatothrix genevensis, Planktolyngbya limnetica, Peridinium pusillum, Trachelomonas volvocina, Cosmarium contractum, Staurastrum forficulatum, Staurastrum leptocladum, Staurastrum rotula, and Staurodesmus dejectus were present in all lakes. Richness varied from 95 taxa (in Lake Gambazinho) to 168 taxa (in Lake Palmeirinha). Jaccard indices were low, and the highest similarities between lakes were 53% (Ferrugem/Ferruginha), 47% (Central/Almécega) and 46% (Águas Claras/Palmeirinha), demonstrating high environmental and biotic dissimilarities between lakes. Geographic distance was not significantly associated with floristic similarity, suggesting that local factors are more important than are regional ones in shaping the phytoplankton composition of lakes.

A concentração de fósforo total foi utilizada para determinar o grau de trofia das principais sub-bacias do trecho médio da bacia do Rio Doce, em Minas Gerais, e variáveis físicas, químicas e microbiológicas da água foram analisadas nos períodos de chuva e seca durante os anos de 2000 e 2001. O estudo visou determinar mudanças na qualidade da água causadas pela sazonalidade e por diferentes atividades antrópicas. As áreas estudadas variaram de oligotróficas a eutróficas. As variáveis que apresentaram as maiores correlações positivas com a densidades de coliformes fecais foram as concentrações de nitrogênio e fósforo total, além disso, bactérias heterotróficas mostrou-se capaz de diferenciar os ambientes. Estes resultados sugerem a inclusão do grau de trofia e da caracterização das atividades antrópicas na bacia, como ferramentas importantes para a proposição de medidas de recuperação e conservação de trechos de rios sujeitos a impactos antrópicos.

Total phosphorus concentration was used to define the trophic state of the main sub-basins of the middle Rio Doce, in Minas Gerais State (southeast Brazil) and physical, chemical, and microbiological variables of water were analyzed during 2000 to 2001. The study evaluated changes in water quality caused by seasonality and human activities. Water temperature, conductivity, pH, total alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, and concentrations of NH4-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, total-N, PO4-P, total-P, DOC, and chlorophyll-a were measured in seven rivers stretches (sampling stations). Total yeasts, faecal and total coliforms, and heterotrophic bacteria were also determined. The studied areas were considered to be under oligotrophic to eutrophic conditions. The variables that presented highest positive correlation with faecal coliforms were total-P and total-N, and heterotrophic bacteria density was identified as a good parameter to differentiate the ecosystems. These results suggested the inclusion of the trophic level and the distinct activities within a watershed as important elements when proposing conservation and restoration areas.
